Ok, I was bored at work , and had some spare materials , so I decided to make a simple light box . You do not need a big fancy digital slr ( i may be using one , but a point and shoot will work fine too) .

The key to any good photo , is good lighting , keeping the camera still to avoid blurring, and a nice lens , but im getting away right now with the simple kit lens .
MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED :
- 1 decent sized cardboard box , big enough where you can place your object in , with room to spare .

-2 . 1 piece of firm , white paper / posterboard ( 80lb paper or thicker) , 2 pieces of thin, translucent paper , i chose tracing paper which is around 40 lb paper, and 1 sheet of gloss paper , thickness for this sheet doesnt matter .

3. pair of scissors and a roll of tape .

4. utility knife / razor blade / exacto knife.

5. 2 simple desk lamps

6. 2 flood lights , 65 - 100 watt each

MAKING THE BOX :

step 1 .
Take the utility knife , and cut almost the whole left and right side of the box out . Note that the opening of the box will be facing you, so the left and the right sides will be the sides with the small flaps .

step 2 .
Then take your gloss sheet , the one where the thickness doesnt matter, and attach it to the top inside of the box . This sheet will just be used as a reflector , its not very necessary , but if you have it available, why not.

step 3.
take the firm piece of posterboard, and it will cover the bottom inside of the box, and curve up onto the background . The point of curving it up onto the back is to iliminate the horizon line . Make sure this sheet is as wide as the box , cut if necessary , or you may need to do some photoshopping to correct this .

step 4.
Where you cut the large squares out on the left and the right , take the tracing paper and tape them to cover the holes . The point of this , is when you place your lights at the sides , direct light is too harsh, and you want to diffuse the light , and tracing paper will do this nicely.

step 5.
Now , take your two desk lamps, with the flood lights in each , and places them a few inches away from the tracing paper.

step 6.
Now your ready to shoot . If you dont have a tripod, find a stack of books, or anything stationary where your camera wont move . If you can control white balance in your camera , set it to tungsten , or a custom white balance . If you perfer to hold your camera, set the iso to around 200-400 , and hope you can get a quick enough shutter speed where it wont blur, but I chose to set the iso at 100 , and had a shutter speed around 25 i think.

***REMEMBER : going farther away and zooming in will usually give a more flattering appearance of your object, as opposed to being right up on it and using a wide angle .

picture of the set up all ready to go :

First sample shot from the light box :

I shot these with 65 watt flood bulbs, but im going to try 100 watt bulbs and see if i can get it brighter . I had to lighten the photo in photoshop .

Also , i could have used a smaller fstop (shot at 5.6, a f8 or so would have given everything in focus instead of mainly the front shoe )

Give your opinions , comments, or if you have questions , ill answer them . Thanks

nice, however, I say the cost to build it is just not worth it, since the lower end pre-made ones online can be had for under $60 shipped. And it comes with everything, including the lighting.

i spent a total of 20 dollars ... would you rather spend 20 dollars and make it your self or 60 dollars for someone else to make it ?

im happy with my 20 dollar light box ...

same results could be had with a point and shoot camera , a digital slr just works better in poor lit situations
