Billboard 200
Quote:
The Billboard 200 is a ranking of the 200 highest-selling new music albums and EPs in the United States, published weekly by Billboard magazine. It is frequently used to convey the popularity of an artist or groups of artists. Often, a recording act will be remembered by its "number ones", those of their albums that outsold all others during at least one week.

The chart is based solely on sales (both at retail and digitally) of newer albums in the United States. The sales tracking week begins on Monday and ends on Sunday. A new chart is published the following Thursday with an issue date of the following Saturday.

Example:

Monday January 1 — sales tracking week begins
Sunday January 7 — sales tracking week ends
Thursday January 11 — new chart published, with issue date of Saturday January 20.

Normally new product is released to the American market on Tuesdays. Digital downloads are included in Billboard 200 tabulation, as long as the entire album is purchased as a whole. Albums that are not licensed for retail sale in the United States (yet purchased in the U.S. as imports) are not eligible to chart. A long-standing policy which made ineligible titles that are sold exclusively by specific retail outlets, such as Wal-Mart or Starbucks, was reversed on November 7, 2007, and took effect in the issue dated November 17.

And Buble will be holding to the top spot when the full numbers for this week get released...

Buble Holds For Second Week With Big Gain
October 21, 2009

Editor: Keith Caulfield; Contributors: Wade Jessen, Gary Trust, Alex Vitoulis; Editorial Director: Silvio Pietroluongo

The penthouse of the Billboard 200 is still a bit "Crazy," as Michael Buble's "Crazy Love" retains the No. 1 slot for a second week with 203,000 (up 55%) . . . Meanwhile, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" soundtrack makes an early arrival at No. 2 after three days of sales, thanks to an early release on Friday, Oct. 16 . . . The Flaming Lips secure their first top 10 album while Mario's fourth set also arrives in the top 10 . . . In Progress Reports, we have tidbits on Keith Urban, Michael Jackson, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys.

FLASH POINTS

• After Michael Buble nabbed his second No. 1 album last week on the Billboard 200 with "Crazy Love" after only three days of sales, the set's first full week in stores keeps the title firmly in the penthouse with 203,000 copies (up 55%). This marks the singer's second-best sales week. His best was when "Call Me Irresponsible" started with 213,000 in 2007.

• Because "Crazy" is residing atop the tally for a second week, it blocks the "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" soundtrack from the top slot as it bows at No. 2 with 115,000 copies. The album was rushed from its original Tuesday, Oct. 20, street date to a release on Friday, Oct. 16, to combat leaks. Next week, "New Moon" may rise to No. 1, if it can fight off country king Tim McGraw, who just released his new "Southern Voice" yesterday.

• The week's second-biggest debut is the Flaming Lips' "Embryonic," which starts at No. 8 with almost 32,000, giving the band its highest-charting album. The group's last studio set, 2006's "At War With the Mystics," debuted and peaked at No. 11 with 48,000 in its opening frame.

• Mario's fourth album, "D.N.A.," enters at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 with almost 32,000 copies and also bows at No. 2 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. It's the singer's second top 10 on the former list and his first since his self-titled debut peaked at No. 9 way back in 2002. His last effort, 2007's "Go," peaked in its debut week at No. 21—but with a much larger sales week: 77,000. (Why? It came out Dec. 11 of that year, in the thick of the competitive holiday shopping season.)

• And now here's a look at the rest of the top 10: Jay-Z's "The Blueprint 3" moves up two slots to No. 3 with 55,000 (down 15%) while Barbra Streisand's "Love Is the Answer" holds at No. 4 with 49,000 (down 34%). Miley Cyrus' "The Time of Our Lives" skips up three rungs to No. 5 with 40,000 (down 15%) while the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." zooms from No. 23 to No. 6 with nearly 40,000 (up 56%). The Peas make a big gain likely thanks to their star turn in a new DirectTV ad that recently premiered, in addition to the iTunes' debut of their new video for "Meet Me Halfway" last week.

• Meanwhile, Taylor Swift's "Fearless" moves up 10 slots to No. 7 with 33,000 (up 7%) after she stopped by "The Oprah Winfrey Show" Oct. 14. Finally, Mariah Carey's "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" falls three places to No. 10 with 31,000 (down 43%).

• Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Oct. 18) totaled 5.8 million units, down 7% compared with the sum last week (6.3 million) and down 11% compared with the same sales week of 2008 (6.5 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 275.6 million, down 13% compared with the same total at this point last year (318.3 million).

MARKET WATCH

• Album units, current chart week: 5.8 million units
• DOWN 7% from last week's charts: 6.3 million units
• DOWN 11% from same week, 2008: 6.5 million units
• This week: The top two albums on both the Billboard 200 and Top Comprehensive Albums sell more than 100,000 copies.
• This week last year on the Billboard 200: Kenny Chesney's "Lucky Old Sun" arrived at No. 1 with 176,000 while T.I.'s "Paper Trail" slipped to No. 2 with 132,000 (down 26%) after a two-week reign atop the list.

PROGRESS REPORTS

• Keith Urban's "Only You Can Love Me This Way" tops Hot Country Songs, marking his 11th leader. Urban's new No. 1 places him in a tie for ninth place with Clint Black among artists with the most No. 1 songs since Nielsen BDS began powering the chart in January 1990. In the current decade, Urban moves into fifth place among artists with the most toppers. Toby Keith is in the lead with 16 since 2000, followed by Kenny Chesney (14), Brad Paisley (13) and Tim McGraw (12).

• Michael Jackson's quasi-new single "This Is It" (featuring the Jacksons) crashes in at No. 19 on the Adult Contemporary chart—the highest debut for a non-holiday song since Sept. 8, 2007. That's when Eagles' "How Long" flew in at No. 19 as well . . . "This Is It" gives the King of Pop his 26th AC hit overall and his first since 1995's "You Are Not Alone" completed its 26-week run on March 16, 1996. For the Jacksons, who provide backing vocals on the tune, it's only their second go at the AC chart. Its first came with "I'll Be There" (credited to the Jackson 5), which peaked at No. 24 in 1970.

• Jay-Z celebrates his 15th top 10 on the Rhythmic airplay chart with "Empire State of Mind" zipping 20-10 in just its fourth week on the tally. His duet partner on the track, Alicia Keys, nets her eighth top 10 . . . The single's four-week climb into the top 10 is the fastest the chart has seen since Drake's "Best I Ever Had" also did the trick June 13.

A LOOK AHEAD

• Among the albums released this week, due on next week's charts: Tim McGraw's "Southern Voice," Flight of the Conchords' "I Told You I Was Freaky," Train's "Save Me San Francisco" and Ben Gibbard's and Jay Farrar's "One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Music From Kerouac's Big Sur."

• Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2008 when: Kenny Chesney's "Lucky Old Sun" arrived at No. 1 with 176,000 while T.I.'s "Paper Trail" slipped to No. 2 with 132,000 (down 26%) after a two-week reign atop the list.

Maybe Fat Joe will finally give up on rap seeing that he can't even outsell the New Boyz.

Fat Joe stays in denial. Rumor has it that Fat Joe still feels he's a force in hip hop, and that he doesn't consider himself overweight either.

Anyways, good shit on this thread B. Is Cudi's POH really # 56?

I still find it amazing that Drake is moving numbers (21,078) in what... the 4th week? of a 7 track EP that's been out for a year now (basically)

Damn @ BEP & Lady Gaga though... 25k and 24k still? Relentless

BEP is going to go 3/3 on their singles reaching #1. I don't remember the last artist/group to do that.

That's Ghosts fanbase directly giving him a "C'mon son."

Just bad strategy all around. You can't put that out...much less on the tails of Cuban Linx 2.

Yeah, I definitely expected more joints sold. Especially considering that it only did 19k first week. Huge brick.

Ross did solid for Def Jam. Haven't added him yet. He's looking at about 400k. Ace Hood flopped.
