Why? This song is like the Jesus loves me of B-Boys and B-Girls all around the world. If you played the video, you know you are almost dancing almost as an automatic response. One of the pillars of Hip-hop was break dancing and this song is the staple song.
Why? The Police. They are meant to serve and protect, which for the most part they do. They aren’t perfect though, especially in the 90’s were racial profiling was in full effect, especially in Southern California. This song at its core discusses that situation and it shows the turning tide of hip-hop at that time. People still (especially in the Black community) do not trust the police.
Why? During a time of the increasing gangster age of Hip-hop, Arrested Development came out with their CD 3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life Of... which was a risk that paid off. Mr. Wendel is one of the many songs on this album that discusses the rising tide of consumerism and wastefulness society was moving towards. Mr. Wendel also discusses the disrespect that those less fortunate receive just because of where they are in society. Good Song and one of the beginning hits from the South.
Love is a subject explored a lot in Hip-Hop. Method man hit a home run here as he kept it street but real in this modern hip-hop ballad. Mary J. Blige is the perfect accessory with this song. Definitely the Blueprint for any love-rap song.
Why? Insomnia, Depression, Schizophrenia, Paranoia. All serious problems explored in this song by the geto boys. I took a Psychology class and my teacher made us have to talk about one of the verses and the psych issue the verse was describing. Real Song that makes you think about the problems stress can cause on everyday life.
Kanye West. Hate him or love him, he has always had a lot of passion and fearlessness in his music especially with his first hit, Through the Wire. Why rap through a wire? A gimmick maybe? That or he was trying to let everyone see how serious he was about hip-hop and he wanted to reflect the pain he was in and the struggle he had to get to where he was.
Why? You can’t listen to this song and not think about when you were a kid. With the classic sample from Teddy Pendergrass in the background, Ahmad goes on describing his childhood, growing up in LA, which you may relate to regardless from where you are.
Dj Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince – Brand New Funk
At one point in time, the DJ was a bigger deal than the MC and this is one of those songs that put this on full display. With the classic James Brown and Donald Byrd sample and the break drum, Jazz kills this beat and Will shows you the alternate job of the MC. (The video especially makes this more evident.)
Why? 2 Pac’s had good gangster songs but he shined more when he was discussing social issues such as poverty, substance abuse, or in this case, all of the above plus youth pregnancy. It’s funny thinking about how this might not be a single if it came out now.
Why? Beat-boxing and lyrical technique is on full display on classic track. If you listen, you can here a couple lines that was bitten by future rappers like Biggie. Doug E. Fresh also held it down, keeping the beat on point the whole time. Great song.
Why? Outkast is one of the greatest hip-hop groups of all time and one of the reasons why is that they broke the mold of what hip-hop songs should sound like. Elevators is one example of this.
Why? Energy usually comes from the beat but this song proves that it can come from a MC as well. The Power of voice is on full display as Troy goes over the opposites and vice versas that life throws at us. Play this song amongst a couple people in the South and they will be hyped up in seconds.
Not your typical Southern rap song, which perfectly displayed that not everybody in the South “GET CRUNK!!!” Phonte’s first verse contains only one rhyme but the flow was so nice that it’s hard to tell till he tells you. Flow.
Why? Midwest underground ears will know this one. This a different take on the traditional love joint since Lo and Decompose spit from a real perspective when it comes to getting these girls. Great example of underground rap that needs to be dug up by the ears of people today.
Why? Probably the best freestyle of all time, Big L destroys this instrumental from Milkbone’s Keep it Real. Jay gets outshined and it makes you wonder where he would be right now if L was alive.
Why? It was all a dream….The song that made a former jail bird turn rapper into a success. This is the original successful, describing biggies life from the hard times to the good life that Hip-hop had given him. We all wish our dreams come true just like Biggie’s (and Puffs, lol.)
Why? REGULATORS!!!! Mount up!. Classic Song from the West that implements the Michael McDonald sample which went away from that old G-funk style that Dre stylize and implemented on the Chronic. This song is the defintion of smooth gangster rap that begin to come out and it shows the power RnB and Rap can have when the artist complement well with each other..
Technically, this isn’t a song, more spoken word, but Cee-lo probably had one of the deepest wake up show displays of all time. If you don’t know already, Cee-lo is more than just “that black guy who is crazy or something.” He is one of the best out the South.
How it works
What you will have to do is - Make a compilation album of songs that represents hip hop the best and covers as many aspects of hip hop possible. Albums will be judged, whoever represented hip hop the best overall wins the prize. First 10 people to sign up enter the contest. I will also have a waiting list if someone decides to quit or just can't finish the contest. Once every has entered, DO NOT POST your album in the thread, pm it to me. Once everyone has pmed me everything, I will post them here, that way no one can copy ideas.

3. Small description of why you chose the song.
4. 10 contestants.

I'll see what Troblesome thinks about members in the contest. I dont see a problem because it might be hard to get 10 people to participate. _________________ I get wasted like them white boys

I don't see a problem with GF members participating, but I think we should give the forum a few days to catch wind of this. From there, any open slots left we can fill ourselves. _________________ FREE DOWNLOAD: 2009 Grammy Family LP

I'm down for the contest. Should be fun.
Just to make a suggestion and to make it more interesting, I think the limit of songs should be based on how many songs you can put on an actual audio CD. Like if I made a list and it had 20 songs, all 20 songs would have to be able to fit on a CD. _________________ Straight outta da D.
